Students must apply (application found here) to this unpaid internship program to provide an opportunity for our students interested in Education as a future career pathway (not including Early Childhood Education). This program would be similar to the Youth Apprenticeship Program to align with current programming. the program involves a partnership with an elementary (or other local) licensed educator willing to mentor a High School student in an Education pathway in 11 and/or 12 grade. The partnership focuses on grades K-6. A skills checklist has been established and is used to evaluate the HS student at the end of the program, with periodic in-person evaluations to be completed by the Career & Technical Education Coordinator. Students will be allowed to schedule internship releases into their schedule the same as other work-based learning students. Students will be responsible for their transportation to the approved internship site. This opportunity is an unpaid internship experience. However, students will earn credit for the internship based on the minimum hour requirement being met, journaling requirements, and a record of successful evaluations. Students may repeat this experience for up to two years. 

Students wishing to participate in this experience should enroll in a full course load during registration. After acceptance into the program, release time will be scheduled.
 

CERTIFIED NURSING ASSISTANT

There are many benefits for earning your Nursing Assistant Certificate while still in high school.  There are also many different ways to enroll in a course that will prepare you to take the state certification test.  Your first step is to determine when your personal schedule will work best for taking the Madison College course or an alternate CNA Program Course, which may be associated with our Youth Apprenticeship program.  Next you should determine when you hope to work as a Certified Nursing Assistant.  The answer to those two questions will help you narrow down when best to take the course.  Remember, in order to renew your Nursing Assistant Certificate, you need to work in the field within two years of earning the certificate.

All options described below will have to follow these application steps, specific to Madison College:

1. Earn a 60 or above on the ACCUPLACER or COMPASS reading test from Madison College OR score a 13 or higher on the ACT Reading test (Madison College only)
2. Sign up for a Madison College account
3. Sign up for a Certified Background Check account and pay fee
4. Complete a Background check
5. Complete a Health History Form

Quality CNA has classes in Madison, Fitchburg, and Waunakee.  For the Quality CNA Program, please complete this form to request a digital application. Once an application is submitted, the CTE Coordinator will schedule a meeting with you to review available class options.

Option 1: Take the course during the Summer. (Between Sophomore and Junior or Junior and Senior Years)

• The best option for students wishing to participate in the Youth Apprenticeship program Junior or Senior Year.
• It does not interfere with school schedules and will allow you to take a full schedule during the school year.
• It may interfere with family vacations, mission trips, etc...
• May choose to enroll at Madison College or through the Quality CNA program (see form above to request application).

Option 2: Take the course sometime during the school year.

• Offers various times and places to take the course in both semesters.
• You must sign up through the Start College Now program if you are interested in attending Madison College (deadlines apply).
• You must sign up early for the Quality CNA course (use the form above).
• Quality CNA typically schedule courses in late afternoons ro evenings and potentially on weekends.
• Could interfere with school breaks.
• May still participate in the Youth Apprenticeship program after earning the certification.

Students wishing to participate in the Youth Apprenticeship program must complete a Youth Apprenticeship application on the Youth Apprenticeship website. For questions and more information please contact the CTE coordinator or use this link to book a meeting. 

Students may pursue their CNA without being part of the Youth Apprenticeship Program.

CONNECTING STUDENTS TO OPPORTUNITIES AND EMPLOYERS TO TALENT

Youth Apprenticeship (YA) is a 1 or 2-year program that gives juniors and seniors in high school the chance to explore a career area of interest. Students can spend part of their school day earning credit and wages while they gain valuable industry experience under the guidance of a local business mentor.

The Wisconsin YA Program is offered to MGHS juniors and seniors who are willing to commit to a paid work experience of 450 hours per year, who enroll in concurrent related instruction, and who would like to earn school credit for a work based experience in their chosen future career pathway.  Monona Grove students, parents, or community members who are interested in learning more about this program should contact the CTE coordinator and review the program information included on this page. Successful completion of the program will include earning one elective credit per semester, a certification from the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development, a paid work experience with an experienced mentor, and a priceless work based learning experience that will support students in future career endeavors.

Dual Enrollment or Dual Credit offers a chance for high school students to earn college credit within the walls of the traditional high school. The partnering institution approves the high school teacher to teach a curriculum aligned with the college.  Students earning a passing grade (college scale) will earn that grade on a college transcript from the partnering institution.

At Monona Grove High School, the partnering institutions are Madison College (courses designated as "DC") and UW-Green Bay.  Students can earn credit in several Career and Technical Education courses and our capstone world language courses. The chart below represents the latest information regarding Dual Credit Options at Monona Grove High School. Please remember that the high school teacher will have the most up to date information. Please direct questions to the certified classroom teacher or the CTE coordinator.

DUAL CREDIT HIGH SCHOOL COURSES (effective 2023-24)

• Spanish 5
• French 4
• French 5
• Introduction to Manufacturing
• Mathematical Reasoning

High School students in grades 9 through 12 may participate in the Early College Credit program and enroll in UW System institutions, private non-profit higher education institutions, and tribally controlled colleges in the State of Wisconsin to take courses that lead to credit granted toward high school graduation, or for college credit only if they are not comparable to a course offered at the high school.

The Board of Education will limit the credits for which the district will pay at institutions of higher education under the Early College Credit Program to 18 credits per student.

The Board of Education is responsible for the costs of a student attending higher education institutions under the Early College Credit Program as defined in statute where the course is not comparable to a course offered in the Monona Grove School District. If the student is taking a non-comparable course under the Early College Credit Program for college credit, only the student’s family is responsible for 25% of the cost. Any student costs that would otherwise be allowed under the program will be waived if they pose an undue financial burden to the student’s family.

If a pupil receives a failing grade or fails to complete an Early College Credit Program course for which the Board of Education has made payment, the Board will request reimbursement from the student/family.

Transportation is the responsibility of the parent/guardian and the student. State reimbursement may be available through direct application to the Department of Public Instruction by the parent/guardian or student.

Additional procedures relating to the implementation of Start College Now and Early College Credit Program will be addressed in board policy.

Visit the following website for specific options through the University of Wisconsin-Madison:  High School Students.  Return the application form to the counseling office before the corresponding semester's due date. Admission requirements include a high school junior or senior with a cumulative GPA of 3.000 or higher and support for your academic plan from your high school counselor, principal, and board of education.

Wisconsin Private/Tribal School ECCP Procedures

Visit the following website for specific options at private and/or tribal Wisconsin universities:  ECCP Information.  Return the application form to the counseling office before the corresponding semester's due date.

Eleventh and twelfth grade students may participate in the Start College Now and enroll at institutions of the Wisconsin Technical College to take courses which lead to credit granted toward high school graduation.

The Board of Education is responsible for the costs of 11th and 12th grade students attending technical colleges under the Start College Now program only if the course is taken for high school credit and the course is not comparable to a course offered in the Monona Grove School District. Courses taken at a technical college may be taken at school district cost under conditions established by statute.

The Board of Education will limit the credits for which the district will pay at technical colleges under Start College Now to 18 credits per student.

If a pupil received a failing grade or fails to complete a Start College Now course for which the Board of Education has made payment, the Board of Education will request reimbursement from the student/family. If the student/family fails to provide reimbursement for the dropped or failed courses(s) the student will no longer be eligible for participation in the Start College Now program.

Transportation is the responsibility of the parent/guardian and student. State reimbursement may be available through direct application by the parent/guardian or student to the Department of Public Instruction.
